WHAT CAN I EXPECT IN MY FIRST THERAPY SESSION?
In your first session you will meet your therapist and start to build a rapport. Your therapist will explain their approach and discuss the logistics of therapy. You can ask questions about the process. Your therapist will ask why you are seeking therapy and what your goals are. Your therapist may ask questions about your background, current struggles, and past mental health history which will help your therapist tailor their therapeutic approach to you. At the end of your first session your therapist will work with you to set a therapy schedule and make any recommendations for further exploration or suggest things for you to work on before your next session.
IS MY THERAPY SESSION CONFIDENTIAL?
Yes, mental health therapy is generally confidential. Therapists are bound by ethical and legal requirements to protect your privacy. What you discuss in therapy is not shared without your consent. However, there are some exceptions to confidentiality such as: (1) if a therapist believes you are at risk of harming yourself or others, they may need to break confidentiality to ensure safety; (2) If there is suspicion of child abuse or neglect, therapists are legally required to report it to the authorities; (3) If a court orders the release of therapy records, the therapist may have to comply though this is very rare; (4) Therapists may discuss cases with colleagues or supervisors for professional development and to ensure they are providing the best care, these discussions are usually anonymous and do not include personally identifiable information.
