Brainspotting Therapy in Murray, Utah
Where the Eyes Lead, the Brain Heals
Brainspotting is a rigorously developed, neurophysiologically grounded approach that is believed to accesses trauma stored deep in the subcortical brain — far below the reach of ordinary conversation. It sits at the intersection of EMDR, mindfulness, and somatic therapy. It draws on the bilateral work and attunement principles of EMDR, the body-awareness focus of somatic therapy, and the present-moment awareness of mindfulness — combining them into something uniquely effective for trauma that has resisted other approaches.Brainspotting targets the neurophysiological sources of trauma, dissociation, anxiety, and emotional pain — not merely their surface symptoms.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, Brainspotting does not require you to construct a coherent narrative around your pain. It bypasses the cortex — the thinking, analyzing, language-generating part of the brain — and works directly with the deeper structures where trauma lives.

Is Brainspotting the same as EMDR?
No — although Brainspotting was discovered by a clinician trained in EMDR and shares some conceptual DNA, the two are distinct therapies. EMDR uses bilateral back-and-forth eye movements to process traumatic memories within a structured protocol. Brainspotting identifies a fixed point in the visual field — a brainspot — and holds it, allowing the subcortical brain to process trauma without directed movement or extensive verbal narration. Many clients who plateau in EMDR find significant breakthroughs with Brainspotting.
Do I have to talk about my trauma?
Very little needs to be said about your trauma and for many clients, this is one of Brainspotting's most valued qualities. Because Brainspotting works subcortically, below the verbal brain, you do not need to construct or narrate a trauma story for healing to occur. You may share what arises during processing if you wish, or you may remain largely silent throughout the session. The brain's own self-healing capacity does the work.
Who is a good candidate for Brainspotting?
Brainspotting is suitable for a wide range of individuals, but it is especially worth considering if you: (1) have experienced trauma that has not fully resolved with talk therapy or EMDR; (2) struggle with dissociation, depersonalization, or DID; (3) find it difficult or re-traumatizing to verbally narrate your traumatic experiences; (4) experience significant somatic symptoms — chronic pain, body tension, or unexplained physical distress; or (5) are an athlete, performer, or creative professional dealing with performance anxiety or creative blocks.
